Expert Cruise Advice!

Embarking on a cruise can be an exhilarating adventure, promising the allure of unpacking just once while journeying to captivating ports of call. Yet, if you're a newcomer to the world of cruising, stepping onto that deck for the first time might feel like setting sail into uncharted waters.

To make sure your fist voyage is smooth sailing, take our expert advice!

Arrive Early

Ensure a smooth sailing experience by arriving at your departure port city at least one day prior to departure, particularly if you're flying to reach your ship. By allowing an additional day or two, you'll set yourself up for a stress-free embarkation day. No need to fret about missing the cruise due to travel delays—instead, you can relish a leisurely morning, savor a delicious breakfast, and arrive at the ship with ample time to spare, ready to begin your voyage hassle-free. If you chose an early terminal arrival time, like we recommend, this works out perfectly!

Additionally, departure port cities often boast destinations of their own, offering travelers a chance to immerse themselves in the vibrant culture and attractions before embarking on their cruise. Moreover, many of these departure destinations are brimming with excitement and opportunities for exploration. Take advantage of the extra time by indulging in some additional beach relaxation, savoring delectable cuisine, and discovering the local landmarks and attractions.

Have a Carry-On Bag Prepared for Embarkation

Make sure to have a carry-on bag ready for embarkation day. While there will be staff members and porters to assist with transporting your checked/large luggage to your room, it may take several hours before you see your bags again. Your carry-on should include essentials such as electronics, travel documentation, any necessary medications, and don't forget to pack your swimsuit for immediate poolside enjoyment upon boarding. Sometimes I’ll even wear my swimsuit and coverup for embarkation and throw a change of clothes in my carry-on for dinner that evening.

Smile for the Camera

Capture those precious moments with a smile! Throughout embarkation day, you'll find countless photo opportunities waiting to be seized. Best of all, there's no charge for these snapshots, so feel free to snap away to your heart's content. Once the cruise concludes (or anytime during your voyage), you'll have the chance to peruse through all the photos and select the ones that hold special memories for you.

Navigating Your Cruise Cabin Balcony

Be mindful of your balcony space during your cruise. While you might not see your neighbors, remember they might be able to see you, so it's best to keep mischief and noise levels down. Also, be cautious of strong winds that can occur at sea. If you plan to hang swimsuits or towels outside to dry, ensure they are securely fastened to prevent them from blowing away. Lastly, if you have your balcony door and main cabin door at the same time, it can create a wind tunnel effect causing all your papers and items in your cabin to go flying. Try to only open one of the doors at a time to keep things in order.

Main Dining Room

Indulge in the culinary delights of the main dining room aboard your cruise. Feel free to order as many appetizers, entrees, and desserts as your heart desires—all included in the cost of your trip. Rest assured, the attentive waitstaff is accustomed to accommodating various dining preferences without judgment. Embrace the adventure of cruising by sampling dishes you might not typically encounter at home—perhaps even treating yourself to a taste of escargot!

Cruise Attire

When it comes to cruise attire, comfort is key, especially considering the average weight gain of one pound per day while on board (see above!). Throughout your voyage, aim for smart casual attire in the main dining room and specialty restaurants, ensuring both style and ease. Most cruises feature a formal night or dress your best night, providing an opportunity to dress to the nines. Additionally, keep an eye out for themed nights such as Caribbean night or 80's night, where passengers can choose to participate as much or as little as they like, adding an extra element of fun to your cruise experience.

Go With The Flow

During your cruise, it's essential to embrace flexibility. There may be circumstances where the captain needs to adjust the itinerary, such as inclement weather or health advisories at a port of call. If such situations arise, the captain will either modify the schedule or navigate to an alternate port. Rest assured, these decisions are made with utmost consideration for your safety. In the event of changes, demonstrate flexibility and kindness towards the crew, understanding that their priority is always ensuring your well-being.

Don’t Miss the Boat!

Steer clear of the frantic rush known as "pier runners," individuals desperately sprinting back to the ship in hopes of making it before the gangplank is lifted (yes, it happens!). Instead, aim to be back on board at least 30 minutes before the scheduled all aboard time. This way, you can leisurely observe the final preparations from the lido deck without any last-minute stress.

Also be aware of “ship time,” which is the time your vessel is recognizing. While some ships maintain the time of their departure port regardless of crossing time zones, others may adjust accordingly. Keep in mind that local time at a port of call may differ from ship time. This can become particularly complex during Daylight Saving Time, especially if the countries you're visiting do not follow the US tradition. Most cruise line apps will note ship time, and have information on how to contact the ship while in port, if needed.

Have a Carry-Off Bag Prepared for debarkation

Similar to embarkation, ensure you have a carry-off bag ready for debarkation. If you opt for the crew to handle your larger luggage, you'll need to leave it in the hallway on the last night of your cruise. There will be information left in your cabin with luggage tags and more details regarding times, etc. Be sure to set aside clothes to wear the next morning (plus a toothbrush, medications, etc.) to avoid finding yourself in the awkward situation of disembarking in nothing more than a robe and slippers, a mishap we've witnessed more than once!

Choosing Your Cruise Cabin

When choosing your cabin, consider its location carefully. Room categories can be tricky to navigate, and what seems like a peaceful spot could end up being directly beneath the disco. Additionally, your cabin's location can significantly impact your comfort, especially if you're prone to seasickness.
