Planning a Trip to Hawaii? Here’s What to Keep in Mind.
Dreaming of a Hawaiian getaway? A lot goes into planning a trip to this tropical paradise, and that’s why working with a travel advisor (like me!) can make all the difference. To help you get started, here are some key things to consider both before and during your trip. Let’s dive in!
Island Hopping or Staying Put?
One of the first decisions to make is whether you want to explore multiple islands or stick to one. Staying on a single island makes for a more relaxed, less hectic trip, allowing you to truly soak in the island’s beauty and culture. Plus, you won’t need to deal with the cost and logistics of inter-island flights. However, if you're eager to experience as much of Hawaii as possible, island hopping offers the chance to compare different islands and their unique offerings. Many people find pairing a more touristy island like Maui, with a relaxing paradise like Kauai is just what they need!
Which Island is Right for You?
Hawaii’s islands each have their own distinct personality, so picking the right one depends on your travel style.
Oahu is perfect if you're looking for a blend of city life and beach vibes, with hotspots like Honolulu and Waikiki offering lively nightlife, shopping, and dining. Oahu is also where you’ll find the Pearl Harbor memorial.
Maui offers a bit of everything—gorgeous beaches, lush rainforests, scenic hikes, volcanoes, and a range of resorts. It’s ideal for those who want a balance of relaxation and adventure.
The Big Island is known for its diverse landscapes and natural wonders like Volcanoes National Park. If you want to see lava flow, this is your island. It’s a great pick for nature lovers as well.
Kauai, the “Garden Isle,” is the place to go if you’re after a more laid-back, outdoor-focused escape with stunning, lush landscapes. A major draw here is the 17-mile-long Napali Coast on Kauai’s north shore.
Set a Budget
A trip to Hawaii involves several elements—airfare, accommodation, transportation, activities, and dining—and it’s important to be mindful that Hawaii can be on the pricier side. Having a budget set before planning can help shape your itinerary and ensure you’re comfortable with your overall spend.
Book Early
Flights and hotels are often the biggest factors in your trip’s cost, and these prices fluctuate based on demand. To get the best rates, it’s smart to book as early as possible, especially if you’re traveling during peak season. Once you’ve chosen your dates and accommodations, securing them with a deposit or booking right away is key to locking in your plans.
Plan Activities Ahead of Time
Don’t wait until you arrive in Hawaii to book tours and excursions—many activities can fill up quickly, especially the popular ones! Make a list of your must-dos and secure them in advance to avoid missing out. Pre-planning also helps you stick to your budget and ensures you won’t be scrambling for things to do once you’re there.
Know What to Pack
Think about the activities you’ll be doing on your trip and pack accordingly. While Hawaii is generally laid-back, certain excursions—like hiking or biking—require specific gear. Flip-flops might be great for lounging by the beach, but sturdy shoes are a must for exploring rugged terrain. Packing right means you’ll be prepared for both relaxation and adventure. Additionally, Hawaii has 11 of the world’s 13 climate zones. If you plan to visit an area of high elevation (like Haleakala before sunrise) be sure to throw in something to keep you warm. Rain gear is also a good idea for those afternoon rain showers.
Consider Transportation
Renting a car is often the easiest way to get around, especially if you plan to explore the islands on your own terms. However, if driving in unfamiliar areas or dealing with Oahu’s traffic doesn’t sound appealing, there are alternatives. We can discuss options like transfers, rideshares, or public transportation to ensure you have the best transportation solution for your needs.
